Coventry University students, Smoking Barrels theatre will be presenting their debut performance of the crazy, seafaring adventure ‘Titanic’ as part of the upcoming Spectrum 2012 during May.

Spectrum 2012 is Coventry University’s annual festival that celebrates the huge diversity of imagination and talent of its final year students. Forming part of the undergraduates’ Degree Show 2012, which exhibits the original work of the UK’s next generation of creative talent.

The ‘Titanic’ play, written by Christopher Durang, was first staged at the Yale School of Drama in 1974 and now makes it way to Coventry. This unusual and absurd drama focuses on an estranged family aboard the SS Titanic. Amongst the recriminations, electric drills, sex toys and gynaecological worries comes a thought-provoking, hilariously moving piece of theatre.

Smoking Barrels are a newly formed company based in the city. Their energetic attitude towards creating innovative work is the foundation on which they base their company ethic.

Darryl Hughes from Smoking Barrels, said:

We chose this play as it is both challenging and entertaining. The idea of this story taking place on the Titanic is both well-timed - given we are in the 100th anniversary year - as well as, we hope, appealing to the public.

During our time on Theatre and Professional Practice course, we have learnt a great deal and we aim to put on a show the audience will not forget.

The show will be taking place at the Ellen Terry Building, Jordan Well, Coventry CV1 5RW on 11th May 2012 (£6/£4 for concessions).
