The Building Information Modelling and its Digital Application module is one part of the Construction Management for England Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) course at CU Coventry.

This module can be studied as a standalone module as part of the Modular Acceleration Programme (MAP).

If you are in receipt of MAP funding, the tuition costs are grant-funded and are deducted from your Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) account. If you are not eligible for grant funding from the MAP, you could choose to self-finance (see the ‘Fees and funding’ section for more details).

The Construction Management for England Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) course aims to help you to experience the breadth and interdisciplinary nature of the construction industry and achieve a qualification which facilitates progression within the industry.

The continuing growth of the construction industry in order to meet local and global demand, has resulted in additional requirements for higher-qualified personnel who can deliver sustainable projects in the most cost-effective way.

The growing construction skills shortage is a problem for the sector and its suppliers and according to the Construction Skills Network (CSN), the UK needs 217,000 extra construction workers by 2025 to fill gaps in the industry. A considerable demand among these numbers is for Construction Managers with BIM expertise in the wider construction industry.

Due to its digital focus, this Building Information Modelling and its Digital Applications module (HTQ) Level 4 is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many computing-related courses.

What you'll study

Construction projects create and generate information that evolve and change, and this extensive information needs careful management to ensure the project’s success. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a collaborative process that brings together construction professionals such as architects, engineers and manufacturers, to plan, design and construct a structure all within one 3D model.

This module aims to give you a background knowledge and understanding of BIM in the context of the construction industry. It will also help you explore some of the key processes in using digital applications to produce data and construction information, that will enable the BIM process.

This module is worth 30 credits.


How you'll learn

As a part-time student, each module totals 30 credits over a six-week period (block) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

A typical 30 credit module requires a total of 300 hours study. This is made up of teaching contact hours, guided and independent study.


Teaching contact hours

Teaching hours can vary. You can expect around eight teaching hours each week. You will also have the option to attend optional sessions including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback.


Guided and independent study

For this module, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study. You’ll be digging deeper into topics, review what you’ve learned and complete assessments. This can be completed around your personal commitments.


Online learning

As an innovative university, we use different teaching methods including online tools and emerging technologies. So, some of your teaching hours and assessments may be delivered online.


Assessment

This module will make use of formative and summative work to both develop and assess students.

Tuition fees3 cover the cost of your teaching, assessments, facilities, and support services. There may be additional costs not covered by this fee such as accommodation and living costs, recommended reading books, stationery, printing, and re-assessments should you need them.

Subject to availability, the Modular Acceleration Programme (MAP) can fund tuition fees for students enrolling on this course who meet the eligibility criteria.

Any funding granted under the MAP will reduce the amount remaining in your future Lifelong Learning Entitlement account.

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK (home) students, if Parliament permits an increase in tuition fees, the university may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Facilities

The Building Information Modelling and its Digital Application module as a part of the Construction Management HTQ course will be delivered at the CU Coventry campus.

Your studies will be centred in high-specification learning environments that benefit from extensive social learning facilities, well-appointed laboratories, industry-standard equipment, lecturing facilities and classrooms, facilitating our innovative teaching methods across a diverse suite of courses.

Laboratory space and equipment

At CU Coventry we have a well- equipped laboratory which we will make use of on the course. The equipment in the laboratory includes a variety of surveying instruments including total stations and automatic levels as long as centre of pressure apparatus, among many others.

Access to laboratory facilities at Coventry University

You will also have access to the Coventry University’s civil engineering laboratory in John Laing Building, which is in close proximity to CU Coventry campus, where you will be able to use for practice throughout your course.

Software

In order to successfully deliver the course, all students will have access to the course-specific BIM software (Autodesk REVIT) as well as AutoCAD which they will be able to access via the university's online cloud system.

The aim of studying the Pearson Construction Management Higher Technical Qualification at CU Coventry, is to achieve excellence in the provision of level 4 and 5 courses.

Depending on the educational level at graduation, i.e. level 4 (HNC) or level 5 (HND), you are expected to have developed different competencies which can be operational (level 4) or managerial (level 5) enabling you to qualify further and pursue a wide range of roles that might include:

  • Level 4 (HNC) Roles – Operational (Assistant Construction Site Supervisor and Assistant Project Manager). You should be able to perform key construction management tasks, understand processes and operations, and work effectively.
  • Level 5 (HND) Roles – Managerial (Construction Site Supervisor, Project Manager). You should be able to increase performance through strategic planning to meet construction aims and manage construction functions, to work effectively in lower- or middle-management positions.
