5 tips for balancing study and part-time work

Finding the right balance when you are a student and working part-time can be challenging, especially when you’re in a new country. But fear not, fellow student adventurers! It is possible to thrive in both areas with a little planning and strategic manoeuvring. There is also plenty of support on offer at the university. Here are my top 5 tips to help you find that balance.

1. Time management

Treat your time like a precious resource. Create a weekly schedule that includes fixed blocks for lectures, tutorials, work shifts, study sessions, meals, and even relaxation! Utilise tools like planners, calendars, and scheduling apps to keep yourself organised and on track

2. Self-care

It's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and neglect your well-being. Make sure to schedule time for self-care. A well-rested and healthy you is a more productive and successful you.

3. Socialise

Mornings are usually filled with lectures and shifts, so try and keep your evenings free to go see some pals. Socialising always helps and keeps the lonely or the overwhelming factor away. And if you are staying in student accommodation then it is the best place to be surrounded by people from all over the world.

4. Healthy eating

The key step to be able to balance it all is eating well. You need energy to get going with the grind and no matter how much of a task eating/cooking might look like, don't skip meals as it is important to be healthy, both mind and body.

5. Get your beauty sleep

This should be your favourite thing to do! Get yourself enough rest and do not mess with your sleep cycle very often. A good sleep is super important to avoid anxiety issues, bad concentration and ill functioning of your brain.

You got this! Remember, finding balance is a continuous process. There will be days when you feel like a superhero, and others where it feels like you are barely keeping your head above water. But by following these tips and being kind to yourself, you can successfully navigate the exciting and demanding world of being a student with a part-time job!
